Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, The Soloist, Hanna, Pride & Prejudice) the period drama portrays a Russian aristocratic woman who sacrifices her unfeeling husband, twenty years her senior, her loveless marriage and family when she falls in love with a handsome but flaky aristocrat. When her husband refuses a divorce, Anna leaves him and her child. She scandalizes the society, becomes a social outcast and after all she commits a suicide.
